The current topic dominating the media is the civil unrest in northern Africa and the spread to the Middle East. Dictatorships dominate that part of the world, and the people are finally standing up against it.

I believe that it is spreading so quickly because of the success in Tunisia. The people of Tunisia (Tunisians?) had been living in a corrupt and repressive society for decades. After violent protests, the people successfully ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. Seeing their success, I think Egypt, Libya, Yemen and possibly Lebanon will quickly follow suit.

What does this mean?

I think this has many implications for the future, and will set the tone for years to come.

In 2001, terrorists struck the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. This action has shaped our country for the past decade and will continue to do so, I think, for decades in the future. Now, in 2011, these uprisings are shaping the future of these countries.

Our government isn’t doing too much about it and I suspect is even a little worried about it. Why? Despite touting the glory of Democracy all over the world,  I think that it is easier for our government to deal with one dictator ruler rather than a country full of civil unrest and anarchy. Also, the uprisings have created a perfect breeding ground for terrorist organizations.

We live in interesting times and I am convinced that this is a turning point in history. What do you think?
