Hello Jello

25 Oct

For me, this substance has a very specific purpose. Jello belongs in a spoon, on the way to my mouth, when I’m watching the Food Network at 1 AM. I like to pretend that its cake.

Happily, Liz Hickok is significantly more creative than I. This bright, sugary substance is her creative medium of choice. She meticulously crafts miniature versions of cities- first hand-carving rubber molds and then casting and arranging the Jello. These pieces also involve a time-based component, as she documents the process by which the cities mold and decay. These surreal urban landscapes glow from below throughout the process, illustrating issues of growth and decay. See her website for more, including a collection of videos.
